Review: The Incredible Mr. Limpet

Welcome to The Chronicles of Trevor, the only blog where reverse evolution is an acceptable form of science.

So as you may or may not know, I go to a day program. All of the staff chose to watch a movie together, calling it the "Day at the Drive-In". I was sitting with my girlfriend Emily, who asked me out at the start of this month*.

This movie day gave me an idea, "Why not review it for my blog?" Today I'm reviewing the final production of the first incarnation of Warner Bros. Cartoons. It's 1964's The Incredible Mr. Limpet, a movie about the titular bookkeeper (played by Don Knotts, of The Andy Griffith Show fame) who, after jumping off the Coney Island pier, becomes an animated fish. This leads his wife Bessie to believe that he drowned and died.

Limpet later discovers an ability he received from the transformation, a lion-like roar that can scare sharks and other dangerous aquatic life. This is where he meets a hermit crab named Crusty. Wait a minute... Crusty the Crab? When I hear that, I think of a certain restaurant from a certain cartoon about a certain sponge.

This movie is set during the events of World War II. After becoming a fish, he wishes to enlist into the Navy by asking to talk to his friend, Machinist George Stickle. Stickle invents the "Waterphone"
No, not that waterphone. Sorry, Kitchen Nightmares and Hell's Kitchen fans.

Back to the review, Stickle's waterphone is basically 2 waterproofed microphones attached to a speaker. Basically, Stickle and Limpet use this to communicate.
On the other hand, the Nazis were developing a torpedo that activates upon hearing the boomioar that Limpet lets out.
Later on, in the climax of the film, Limpet 1-Up's the Nazti Nazis...
...by swimming to their subs and destroying them!

The animation is almost Disney-esque, the random musical numbers are lovely, and there's some comedy thrown in here and there. The missile-guiding scene gave off Looney Tunes vibes, which makes sense, since the animation was produced by the same folks.

I'd give this film ★★★★★!

*Update (Oct 2, 2024): Me and Emily are no longer together as of July 6th, 2024. But I have a new girlfriend, and her name is Ashley! Check this image of us out! Me and her will officially be together for 2 months on Saturday October 5th!

A photograph taken inside a bowling alley, featuring a young man with glasses and a hat and a woman with medium-length wavy hair. The man is hugging the woman with his left arm. The woman is holding a plush toy of a cat. Two other men are seen in the background reaching for bowling balls.
