What Really Grinds My Gears: Going Darker and Edgier

This is The Chronicles of Trevor, the blog that will always be for general audiences.

Want to know what really grinds my gears? When a TV Show, Movie, Video Game, etc. goes from a light and soft franchise to more dark and edgy content.

The Title card of Designated Survivor, containing red and blue stripes, and the shows, logo, with the I in survivor replaced by a human figure.

For instance, The 2016 - 2019 TV series Designated Survivor. produced by
ABC Studios (seasons 1-2 only) and eOne. This show's plot involves a fictitious explosion in the Capitol building that kills the president and his successors. The Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Thomas Kirkman, was announced to be the designated survivor, who would live in a secluded space, and carry on presidential duties. Mr. Kirkman would have a more balanced stance in his political views, which is something you don't always see in political dramas. It managed to have a 2-season run on ABC, carrying reasonable TV-PG to TV-14 ratings, which made it the perfect program for family viewing.

ABC canceled it, and Netflix picked it up for a 3rd season. Considering it's Netflix we're talking about, they turned what was a great show, with great writing and believable scenarios, into a profanity-laden garbage dump, with a TV-MA rating. I'd rather have a horse throw up in my eyes than watch this trash. NETFLIX, NOT EVERY PROGRAM NEEDS A TV-MA RATING!

The Logo of Star Trek Discovery. The logo of Star Trek Picard. The words Star Trek are written in a futuristic italic font, and PICARD is written in a sans serif font. The A in Picard is replaced with the Starfleet logo.

Next up, We're talking about Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard. These series were made for Paramount+ (back when it was still CBS All Access), and contain explicit Klingon love scenes, f-bombs, bloody and gory violence, and other stuff that feels so out of place in a 23rd century setting. Besides, The Voyage Home taught us that profanity was no longer needed in the utopian setting of the Trek universe. So everytime I hear f-bombs in Trek, I get transported back to the present day for a split second.

CBS states that Star Trek fan films must not contain TV-MA or R rated content, but the fact that the latest shows, MADE BY CBS STUDIOS, contain F-bombs, "Klingon on Klingon Action", and gory imagery, is the most hypocritical thing I've ever seen. They even cancelled Star Trek: Prodigy, the Trek series made for Nickelodeon, and continued making the TV-MA rated duo of what I like to call "Fake Trek: Disgracery" and "Fake Trek: PukeHard". Lemme say that again. THEY CANCELLED THE TV-Y7 NICKELODEON TREK SERIES FOR THE TV-MA RATED FAKE TREK! What the heck, CBS?!

I also did a review of The Banana Splits Movie, which is another example of a darker-and-edgier adaptation of a generally family-friendly series.

That has been "What Really Grinds My Gears". Thank you for reading! :)
