Today, I am going to review the recently-leaked SpongeBob film, Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie, without any spoilers! This film was slated to be released later this year on Netflix. So, you could say that this is an early premiere!
This is the first SpongeBob spin-off film, with everyone's favorite Texan squirrel girl, Sandy Cheeks, as the main character. Will this be as fun as a Texas barbecue, or as painful as a failed bull ride? Read this review and find out!
The reason why this film is a Netflix original is because Paramount Global, the owner of Nickelodeon and SpongeBob, has decided to produce content for its O&O (owned-and-operated) service, Paramount+ (which I have a subscription to), and other services.
At least Nickelodeon is making some Netflix originals, since 61% of Netflix originals are rated TV-MA. That's almost more than HALF of their original library. Heck, they even ruined Designated Survivor, a soft TV-14 show that was on ABC. This could change the face of Netflix.
But enough delaying what you came for, HERE'S SBB:TSCM!
As I did with my reviews of the BBC's adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia, I will share some screengrabs from the film so you can see some previews.
I just have to say, this film's animation, provided by Pipeline Studios and Sinking Ship Entertainment, is excellent! It kinda reminds me of Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years, which kinda makes sense. The casting was excellent, especially the scientists Phoebe and Kyle. The whole idea of making clones of the Bikini Bottomites is kinda meta, considering the vast amount of SpongeBob merchandise out there. The credits say that there was a "Viacom Safety Staff", and that the film is a trademark of Viacom, so I guess that that part of Paramount that owns Nickelodeon is still called Viacom. I thought that they fully retired the Viacom brand to focus on the main brand they own, being Paramount.
But I digress. As for my review, I give it 1 lone star out of 1, or 100%.
