Entertainment One (RIP 1980-2024)

Welcome to The Chronicles of Trevor.

If you know me, I'm not a fan of the business practices of the Canadian-American movie studio Lionsgate. They acquired the producers of the Twilight Saga films, Summit Entertainment, and changed their logo from this...
to this thing...
There's no summit ANYWHERE in this logo! and the camera pans 7 seconds in to reveal the byline
Which lasts 14 seconds, DOUBLE THE TIME OF THE NAME OF THE COMPANY THE LOGO IS FOR!

But today, we're not talking about Summit Entertainment, I'm talking about the retiring of the Entertainment One brand.

Entertainment One was founded in 1970 as Records on Wheels. ROW was a mid-budget video and music distributor based in Canada. In 2005, it was renamed to E1 Entertainment (Entertainment One Entertainment, kinda redundant if you ask me). And finally, in 2010, it just became Entertainment One.

This company acquired the film assets of Alliance Atlantis after its demise in 2007, and in 2015, after the revived Alliance Films was acquired by and folded into eOne, used the companies' fanfare performed by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

But sadly, on June 7th of this year, 6 months after eOne's acquisition by Lionsgate, said parent company decided to rebrand its newly-acquired studio as...

Lionsgate Canada.

This name is extremely confusing, since Lionsgate itself was founded in Canada in the late '50s as Cinépix Film Properties. It was sold off to another group, and rebranded as Lions Gate Films (with a space). In 2005, the space was dropped following the introduction of the famous "Gears" logo. And in 2013, the company introduced its current logo, the one where you're zooming past space inside the reflection of giant metallic blue letters.

But as I was saying, I myself KNEW that Lionsgate would gut Entertainment One, because they sacked their television production division 4 months after the acquisition.
I myself wanted Fremantle to acquire it, since Fremantle just slaps a byline under its acquired studios. So It would've said

eOne
a Fremantle company

Anyway,
RIP Entertainment One

1970-2024
