Welcome to The Chronicles of Trevor, the blog that will NEVER ask you to donate an arm and a leg in order to access any content!
Today, I'm ranting about Holiday Helpings, a segment that WHDH-TV (channel 7) puts in newscasts throughout December.
The station does various activist work for the charity 'Project Bread', such as being the key sponsor for the organization's annual 'Walk for Hunger'. But another thing they do for the charity, around the holiday season, is share various family recipes of various 7 News anchors and reporters. This segment, known as 'Holiday Helpings', seems like a great idea on paper, but WAIT JUST A SECOND...
They show a short overview of the recipe as a 5-minute long story. After the segment ends, they throw up a card that states that in order to get access to the recipe shown and all other recipes, you are required to make a $5 donation to Project Bread! I guess WHDH pulled a Patreon before it was cool. If I were at WHDH, I'd make the recipes free, but have the option to donate whatever to Project Bread if you wanted to, e.g. the Buy Me a Coffee payment model. Besides, the holidays are all about giving, and GREED is not what giving is about. WHY DOES WHDH FEEL THE NEED TO BE GREEDY BY HAVING YOU PAY 5 BUCKS IN ORDER TO ACCESS THE TEXT-BASED RECIPES?! This is EA levels of scummy. I get that they want to help fight hunger, but having to pay to get a recipe that could satisfy the hunger of hungry Christmas party guests is completely hypocritical in all senses of the word!
Also, I'm sure that the anchors and reporters would rather give their recipes out for free anyway, because they are popular faces that are like family to thousands of loyal viewers, and I;m sure the viewers would TOTALLY make the recipes of the ones they truly love.
This is in honor of the first Holiday Helping recipe segment airing later tonight on 7 News.
