My takes on Nintendo Switch Sports

  

This is The Chronicles of Trevor, the only blog who's owner is friends with Haru from Wii Sports. Yes, really!

  Ah, the Wii Series. These games are very iconic, from the scenery of Wuhu Island, to the 100 characters that are well known and loved by millions, you can't deny that this series is nostalgic. But in 2021, Nintendo announced a new entry in the series which would change everything for the worst. I'm talking about Nintendo Switch Sports.

    NSS is considered to be a new entry in the Wii Sports series, but it just doesn't feel like a Wii Sports game. It is more like "We Have Wii Sports At Home". Besides, the Sportsmates look like Xbox 360 Avatars if they were designed by Video Brinquedo.

The Sportsmates also use the names of the CPU's from Wii Sports Resort, rubbing salt in the wounds of Mii fans.

That one above is the Sportsmate version of Haru. This one isn't as memorable OR as adorable as her Mii counterpart, as shown below.

Look at her. She is so cute. I thought so when I first saw her in Wii Sports Baseball back when I was 7. She just looks like that one person who's so charming, that they'd make friends with a stick. She just has that innocent look on her face, like "I'd like to be your friend!"

Other than the obvious change, NSS gives us a plaza called Spocco Square, consisting of 8 sports, 6 of which are sports available in previous games. Sure, WSR gave us a few returning sports, but the game modes within each sport made it alright in the eyes of many players.

This game also lacks the personality of the previous titles, especially when it comes to Bowling. In the first 3 games, you could throw the ball backwards, causing the background Miis to spin in shock! This was comedy GOLD back in those days. In Switch Sports however, you can't.

Also, you cannot release the ZL or ZR buttons on the Joy-Con, like how you had to release B in Wii Sports and its 2 other sequels, in order to roll the ball. Releasing the button made it more realistic, like the ball coming out of your hand. Way to confuse your players, Nintendo!

Thank goodness I have a Switch Lite, so I can't play this trash heap. But seeing gameplay of it is how I made this review.

I'd give this game a -4 out of 10.

My takes on Wednesday's Nintendo Direct presentation

 Wednesday, June 21st was the latest Nintendo Direct presentation. These presentations showcase upcoming game releases and DLC for games already released. These presentations, to gamers, are like Christmas. Tonight, I am going to share my takes on some of the announcements.

First, I'm going to talk about the Super Mario RPG announcement. This is a fully 3D remake of the 1996 Super NES game Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, which was a collaboration between Nintendo and renowned game publisher SquareSoft. I was shocked to see a remake of this cult classic, since Square Enix, the successor to SquareSoft, is very stingy with Intellectual Properties, and since they developed the game, the original characters Mallow and Geno are owned by SE, which I find to be weird, since Nintendo PUBLISHED the game, and as such, I think that the characters to a game should be owned by the publisher of the game, even if they were made by a seperate developer.

Next, I'm gonna talk about the reveal of the new Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC Wave 5 track "Squeaky Clean Sprint". From what it looks like, I think it's the bathroom of Peach's Castle. The new characters were surprising, too. Wiggler, the caterpillar enemy, is being added, after being in the Mario Kart 7 roster, and absent from the original MK8 roster. Petey Piranha, from the Mario Kart: Double Dash!! roster is back, alongside a new character, Kamek, the Magic Koopa who has been Bowser's adoptive parent since Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

The new 2D Mario game, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, looks so psychedelic and trippy, and I LIKE IT! It looks more like a fan game than a real Nintendo-published game, which is ironic, considering Nintendo's stance against fan games.

Pikmin fans must have had the time of their lives with the details of the Pikmin 4 game, alongside remasters of the 1st and 2nd Pikmin games. That means that the whole series is now available on Switch, since Pikmin 3, a Wii U game, was ported to Switch as Pikmin 3 Deluxe. 

There was also a new Princess Peach game teased to us. It is slated for a 2024 release. I think that this game is going to be a sequel to the 2006 cult classic Super Princess Peach.

And the Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon remake looks alright so far, I think that Next Level Games will polish it up and make the graphics look like Luigi's Mansion 3. 

These were the best announcements in my opinion, and I think that Nintendo had a better presentation than the other guys this year!

 

Movie Review: The Super Mario Bros. Movie

 You might not know this, but I am a huge Super Mario fan. When I heard that Nintendo and Illumination were working on a Mario movie, I was a bit skeptical at first, since Illumination is known for being cheap when it comes to animation. But did Illumination produce a cheap marketable movie with toilet humor and cheesy jokes, or did they make a redeeming masterpiece, as Sony Pictures Animation did with "Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse"? Read my review and find out!

But first, a history of Nintendo movies. 1986 saw the release of a Japan-exclusive anime movie called "Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach!" which was a moderate success. 7 years later, Disney's Hollywood Pictures division, alongside Lightmotive and Allied Filmmakers, released a sci-fi adventure flick called "Super Mario Bros." which was SO LOOSELY based on the games, and the only mention of Nintendo or Shigeru Miyamoto was at the very end of the credits in extremely small mice-type. It's an insult to the most popular gaming franchise ever, just like how Star Trek: Discovery is an insult to Gene Roddenberry's ideals from the original 1966 series.

Forget what the critics on Rotten Tomatoes say. This movie is the freshest tomato of the 2023 movie bunch! The movie opens with a shortened Universal logo, an Illumination logo with a minion in a go-kart failing to get a rocket boost, and a pixel animation of Mario and Luigi hitting a "?" Block that contains a large Nintendo logo. That trio of logos were an excellent way to show who made the film.

This film contains visual and musical references galore. My favorite reference was the Toad at the antique store with the NES cartridge. That was a great little visual gag alongside the elder Toad saying "have you tried blowing into it?". Even though the recommended way to clean an NES cartridge is to use a damp cotton swab to clean its contacts that connect to the pins in the system.

Peach is more of a good girl gone bad instead of the usual damsel in distress, which is awesome, and a welcomed change, and Luigi is the one that needs to be rescued.

The movie's message is important as well, You can get through tough times if you stick together. After all the struggles brought to us by 2020, it's more important than ever.

Chris Pratt did an okay job as the plumber in red. But Charlie Day's high-pitched New York accent fits Luigi's personality like his gloves. But Jack Black stole the show with his portrayal of Bowser. Let's not forget the hilarious love song "Peaches". It made me crack up like a Yoshi Egg.

All in all, if you are a fan of Mario, you'll enjoy this masterpiece. Nintendo should release a cartridge copy of this movie on Switch.

I give this movie 5 Super Stars!
