This is The Chronicles of Trevor, the blog that is the epitome of rambling and reviewing!
Remember June 5th's Banana Splits Movie review? I decided to take that one-off non-sequitur "Grinds My Gears" section and turn it into a series!
Ya really wanna know what really grinds my gears? TikTok. This social media app has been around since 2017, and has made me furious since then.
Just terrible. Who in their right mind would use that color shift effect in an app icon?! And they even advertised this trash before almost EVERY video on YouTube when it was introduced. Just imagine a headache-prone person getting ready to watch some YouTube and all of a sudden, BOOM! TikTok ad! Headache and no video. And even worse, is the terrible placrment of the logo as a watermark on videos! It even animates the logo's red and blue colors as if it were shaking, and goes from one spot to another, making it even more migraine-inducing. But a poorly-designed logo that is a 'Screw You' to accessibility isn't the only reason why this app is a fiery cesspool of a service.
The one and only female text-to-speech voice that has even trickled into videos on other platforms is another thing that annoys me. Why did they choose an extremely cheery, vocal-fry laden voice for this? Imagine watching a video where someone is at a funeral, and you hear "So mY HuSbAnD'S BrOThEr JuST DiED :D" in that voice. Dissonance at its worst.
AND, It's an app owned by ByteDance, a technological arm of the Chinese Communist Party. And, like Genshin Impact, which I call:
It also does the famous CCP thing of hiding their Chinese origins by disguising themselves as a Singapore-based company. Even the sister app CapCut does it. They say the app is from "TikTok Pte. Ltd". Sure, there may be a building in Singapore with TikTok signs on it, but the servers inside that office are fake decoys. And their so-called "PrOjEcT TeXaS" is a phony operation. So if you're using TikTok, you have Chinese spies in your pocket.
Lets not even forget the high pitched music that's popular, such as the horrible OH NO song, and sped up pop songs. I guess the Happy Hamsters made a successful revival!
And TikTok has been invading my Google searches! I won't ever switch to DuckDuckGo, but this is making me want to switch to another search engine. Every time I search for anything, you can GUARANTEE that a TikTok result would be in it. It's like a box of raisins in your trick-or-treat bag. I usually use "-site:tiktok.com" in order to get my results to be just the good stuff. Thank the Google Gods for search operators.
The ban on this garbage-laden trash heap of an app was the only thing I agreed with #45 on, and I still support a ban on it.
That has been "What Really Grinds My Gears". My review of A Bug's Life comes out tomorrow!
