When Fans Cheat: Sonic Frontiers vs Genshin Impact

Welcome back to The Chronicles of Trevor, the blog that doesn't spy on you with some state-of-the-art spyware.

Remember my Inaugural installment of "What Really Grinds My Gears"? If not, It was about the worst social media app of this decade, TikTok. In that post, I talked about how TikTok hides its CCP ownership by saying it's a Singapore-based company, comparing it to a game that does the same thing, Genshin Impact. I even called it "Trials of China", referencing the 2020 remake of 1995's then-Japan-exclusive Seiken Densetsu 3 (pronounced Say-ken den-set-sue) (The Legend of the Sacred Sword 3), re-titled alongside its Collection of Mana counterpart, Trials of Mana.

But I should've called it:

On a red background, a parody of the logo for "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild"

But I digress. When the game was shown off at ChinaJoy 2019, an angry gamer smashed his PS4 in protest for being a BotW clone

A Chinese gamer destroys his PlayStation 4 console at a gaming convention. Other people stare in shock.

I get it! Just look at the similarities!
Left: Breath of the Wild
Right: Genshin Impact

8 images showcasing the similarities of 2017's The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and 2020's Genshin Impact Version 1.0. The fire graphics, swimming, lasers, and giant boss enemies are extremely similar, since both games are cel-shaded open world games.

Someone call Nintendo! I smell a lawsuit coming!

But later on, with the releases of later areas, like the latest Fontaine, they've been less of a knockoff. But I still think that its original V1.0 version is too much of a clone than I've ever seen.

But I digress. This post is about the endless battle surrounding Genshin Impact and Sonic fans.

It all started when both games were announced to be nominees for the Player's Voice award at The Game Awards 2022. This was fishy since Genshin Impact was released in 2020, 2 years before.

Sonic Frontiers is a 2022 open-world game in the Sonic the Hedgehog series of video games. Like all Sonic games before it, It was developed by Sonic Team, and presented by SEGA. It is said that this game is the best 3D Sonic game in a long time.

Sure the Sonic fanbase was being extra toxic, by calling Genshin fans extremely horrible things, and saying they touch kids (OMGWTFBBQ!). I think since Genshin's characters are mostly underage, but the designs are overly sexualized. Sure it's an anime-style game, but it's horrible to sexualize teenage girl characters like that, especially with a fanbase with guys that are kinda-sorta unaware of the character ages. What's worse, is when the February 2022 Italian Senate incident (or as I call it, TifaGate) happened, (a Not-Safe-For-Work video featuring Tifa Lockhart from Final Fantasy VII played during a Zoom meeting,) The same hackers played a similarly NSFW video featuring a Genshin character (who is said to be 15; I don't play Genshin, so I wouldn't really know). It was broadcast on the Italian state-owned channel RAI! (Radiotelevisione Italia) OMGWTFBBQ! If I worked at RAI, I would've put up a technical problems slide and switched to a different program. If I were an Italian viewer at the time, after the Tifa video (lol), I'd switch to Italia 1 (a commercial station owned by Mediaset).

But I digress. Here's a video about how The Game Awards cheated Sonic Frontiers.
Heads Up: The music in this video is by my favorite game composer, Kenji Ito. (This isn't from any Sonic games, but he is one of the many musicians who collaborates for Super Smash Bros., which contains Sonic. Ito became part of the team during the development of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the one that gave us Sonic!)

I've never seen any Mario games win that much awards at TGA either (besides best family games), but Mario is one of the biggest characters in gaming, one who downright saved the industry!
