Something That Slightly Jittered My Gears

Welcome to The Chronicles of Trevor, where the only graphic content you'll find is the photos and videos on this site! Get it?

It's time for something that slightly irked me today. So I live in Massachusetts, and my family usually tunes into independent station WHDH-TV, channel 7, for their news.

Like I said in a previous post, they're known for their 'if it bleeds, it leads' journalistic approach, which was originally crafted by Miami station, WSVN. These 2 stations, alongside WLVI, CW 56, also based in Boston, are owned by the same company, the Sunbeam Television Corporation.

But on the topic of WHDH, while I was getting my glasses out of my room, I overheard a promo for 7 News, where they specifically mentioned Keke Vencill, an anchor and reporter at the station.

If you haven't read that post about channel 7, Keke Vencill has messed with the formula Sunbeam stations are known for by starting every story, regardless of the topic, with "we must warn you that some footage may be hard to watch". I even joked that she would even state that for a story about a homeless family getting tickets to Disneyland!

So, she made them go from 'If it bleeds, it leads' to 'If it's a news story, it contains graphic content'. So WHY do they need to make a promo stating they have her on their team? It's like they're saying "HEY, WE'RE 7 NEWS, WE HAVE THE WORLD'S MOST SENSITIVE NEWS ANCHOR ON OUR TEAM, GET GUINNESS ON THE PHONE, SHE'S A RECORD BREAKER!"

All this coming from the station that's only JUST beating WFXT 25 because of that station's owner, Cox Media Group, trying to fix what wasn't broken, and causing the station to crumble into a shell of its former self.

Also, NBC was right to start up an owned-and-operated station in the area, since they knew what was bound to happen to both 7 AND 25. I also think the Peacock Network did that to fill in the gap left by Fox when they traded 25 to Cox in order to get KTVU in San Francisco.

Anyway, if you want a better news source in the Boston TV market, WBZ (CBS 4, owned by CBS), WCVB (ABC 5, owned by Hearst Television), and WBTS (NBC 10, owned by NBC) are my picks.
